There has not been a time since Sept. 2005 that the check engine light has stayed off for any length of time. The Volvo people recognize the system is flawed, but continue to charge $$$$$$ for any code that comes along. I hate this car.

Transmissions went out at 57000 miles, very expensive, trimmings are cheaply made. So many problems when I first bought it.

The seats are very comfortable.
Quick and sleek.
The compact size for a Volvo really makes the difference.
Cons: How would you improve 2005 Volvo S40?
I would improve its reliability. I've had this car for 2 years and already have had to replace the hose which cost $325 for labor when the hose itself cost next to nothing. Driving belt had to be replaced within a year. 2nd year the PCV gave out and that was under warranty only because of emissions. Very costly car, I am 21 years old I should not have to be paying to drive a Volvo like this. If you're well employed and don't mind spending so much on a car, this is the one for you. I've had Volvos in my life since I was born and this model is not dependable, I'm scared to drive the car because I feel like something will go wrong every time.

It looks nice inside and out, but the inside has cheap features.

By buying a different car - this car has cost me an arm and a leg! With repairs added on top of the payment I should have bought a lamborghini.

I give this car a .5 star! If you have a family and do not want to be troubled with costly repairs do not by this car! Volvo really dropped the ball with this car.... I pray every night for someone to steal this car - it just costs me too much.

Styling is great on the S40.
Could use a bit more power with the 2.4i version, but still moves well.
Cons: How would you improve 2005 Volvo S40?
Continue to have problems with the driver's seat. Continuous squeaking noise and have the track bars replaced and adjusted twice.
The a/c went out once and the radio knobs from the heat are pealing.
2005 Volvo S40 Review:
Overall it is a good value for the price and safety of a Volvo. Could use more power. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Love the looks and it is a fun car to drive, when it works properly.

I would improve the reliability. My car has had numerous problems and has been in the shop frequently.
2005 Volvo S40 Review:
I would have loved my V40 if it hadn't had so many problems. Little problems like trim and door handles needing to be replaced don't bother me. It's the major problems like dying on acceleration, not starting easily. My V40 was in the shop for nearly a month last summer because it kept dying and no one could figure out the problem.
